Greg and I were recently going over some marriage materials that discuss God’s order, marital oneness and the power that God releases in our marriages. We have recently been going through a lot of changes in our household and family lately, so I have been thinking a lot about synergy in marriage.
When two people get married they become one-flesh.
Marriage is the closest working relationship I can think of, when we say “I do”, we are committing to share all parts of our lives with our spouse, the good, the bad and the holy. I think it is God’s plan that we should be moving in the same direction with agreed upon goals in mind, yet I see many couples today who seem to be co-existing with separate lives going on.
then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. ~ Philippians 2:2-4
If we are one flesh, how can we successfully move in two directions?
Synergy is the creation of a whole that is greater than the simple sum of its parts. The term synergy comes from a Greek word meaning “working together”. A great example of synergy is horse pulling. If two horses can each pull 1000lbs, when harnessed together they can not only pull 2000lbs, but on average 1/3 more, that’s over 2600lbs. I see this as God math and He intends us to use it in our marriages. When two people are yoked together and moving in the same direction with the same goals, they can achieve way more than two people trying to accomplish separate tasks alone.
Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate. ~ Mark 10:9
How do we make synergy work in our favor?
I think all marriages are capable of both spouses moving in the same direction, it just takes being purposeful about it. Keeping proper order and oneness in our marriages contributes to us moving in the same direction. We have to talk about where we want to go in order to steer the ship there together, having conversations together about what you would like to accomplish together is a great start. Make a date with your spouse to get your synergy moving in the right direction!
